Youth before death

“Alice? I can’t see much. Are you here?”

“Yes, Kara, I’m right here next to you.”

“Ah! Lovely! Do you know George Clifton will be there?”

“Oh! We must spruce up then.”

“I suppose, but I rather like Richard Peck.”

“Strapping young man. But dreams of young men are not for us old women.”

“Old women have nightmares; young ladies have dreams.”

“Wise. But in the last execution, Richard Peck lopped off only half of dear Elizabeth’s head! Not a clean cut.”

“No, but I don’t care much for the symmetry.”

“Oh, really, Kara, you musn’t like him. He is handsome but stupid.”

“Yes, but so strong.”

“Kara, are you blushing? You know, without brains, brawn means nothing!”

“It can’t hurt to have my last moments looking at such a handsome-”

“Kara!”

“Oh, please! But George Clifton is fine. He will keep the line moving quickly.”

“Yes, definitely. I prefer it done cleanly. Richard Peck-”

“Oh, don’t talk about Richard Peck badly! Please, don’t!”

“You act as if he is a nice boy.”

“He is a handsome one.”

“It doesn’t matter. George Clifton will have to do.”

“I suppose. I really wish Richard Peck-”

“Stop with Richard Peck!”

“Sorry, sorry. George Clifton is a bit old, don’t you think?”

We are a bit old.”

“A little more than a bit.”

“Hah! Truer words have not been spoken.”

“I believe our time is coming soon.”

“Our days of knitting and sewing are over!”

“Do you know what you will say for your last words?”

“I think I will pretend to curse Richard Peck.”

“Oh, please don’t! He’s such a nice man.”

“I doubt him.”

“You doubt Richard Peck?”

“I doubt everything.”

“Even God?”

“Especially God.”

“Do not blaspheme, Alice!”

“Oh, dear Kara! Do you hear that? It must be starting!”

“Indeed. Hurry and get in line. We must find a good spot near the beginning. It will be over quickly that way. Oof! I can smell George Clifton from here!”

“George Clifton really isn’t so bad.”

“Alice, you’ve been good to me. Really.”

“Oh, Kara, don’t make me cry! It’s all I could do in this world full of idiotic executioners.”

“Except Richard Peck.”
